Crane Pedestal Seating Face Grinding
The flatness of the seating face that carries a ship crane's slewing bearing is restored on board with a portable grinding rig.
A seating face that has lost its flatness does not carry the slewing bearing evenly; the crane runs roughly and the mounting bolts are overloaded.

Process Steps
When It Is Needed
- When the flatness of the face exceeds the slewing bearing maker's limit before a bearing change
- When the crane shudders, makes noise or moves unevenly while slewing
- When mounting bolts break or keep working loose
- When the face shows corrosion or impact damage
Scope and Limits
- We do not supply slewing bearings or bolts.
- Weld repair is not part of this job; grinding achieves flatness by removing material and cannot build up missing material.
Frequently Asked Questions
What flatness is targeted?
The figure given by the slewing bearing maker. Measurements are reported against it.
Is the work done on board?
Yes. Once the crane and the slewing bearing have been lifted off, the grinding rig is fixed to the seating face and the work is done on board.
